Rijks Museum, the Ship Paintings

Dutch War Ships

Old Dutch Ships, replicas

The Rijks Mulseum in Amsterdam has been undergoing reconstruction
as long as I've lived here, six years. The exhibition that
is showing now of the permanent collection
is but a small portion of what
they own.
This September the museum will reopen
it's main building which the public here has been
waiting for many years.

The photos I have shown are not all of the
paintings, just the ones I enjoyed
the most.

The photo of Queen Beatrix was on display on the front of the
museum in honor of her birthday party on April 31.

Beauty all over Holland Right Now

I didn't post all my photos of Edie and Laura's visit
 nor Bobbie and Marty's visit.
There are so many to sift through.
Edie went to see Frans Hals with us.

I enjoyed seeing the Rijks and Van Gogh museums with
my cousins.
 Vermeer
Bobbie and Marty are ready to go back
to the hotel. The Van Gogh Museum had three floors
But it was worth it!
As I snapped this photo of Vincent
the guard tapped me and told
me it wasn't allowed to take photos.
The Rijks let me take as many as I wanted without
a flash.

When I returned to Oostkapelle from Amsterdam last weekend
family came to visit.
Joan comes in with a sack of white asparagus!
This is the most elegant meal to eat you can imagine
and perfectly Dutch.

Luc, Enno and Joan did all the cooking because they are Dutch and know
this specialty.

Menu
Grilled Salmon
Baked Vitloaf wrapped with Italian Ham,
Grilled Steak
Mashed Potato Casserole.
Drizzled in a special sauce for asparagus.
This is a work of art!

I have so many fond memories whirling in my head of
the past three weeks.

Time Out

I was just reading blogs I subscribe to and found the article in this French blog interesting. www.lostinarles.blogspot.com. You might, too. It's a French political point of view from a graduate of Yale Univ. who lives in Provence.

Today I am resting. It has been such a whirlwind three weeks since I've returned from Texas. I'm meeting myself coming and going.

The weather has been the wettest, coldest I remember Holland in April and I'm coming down with a cold. I got chilled on Monday and couldn't warm up.
 Coming and Going

I have many great memories I've collected the past three weeks spent with friends from the USA and family in Holland. Plus, I've seen Kinderdijk,  Keukenhof, Haarlem, Amsterdam twice and three famous museums, The Rijks and Van Gogh Museums in Amsterdam and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. I'll be posting photos from the museums on my art blog, www.jennyshortmfa@blogspot.com

My latest book is taking some of my time as well. I want to have it ready for Enno's birthday in two weeks. It will be posted through my publisher, http://wwwblurb.com in the bookstore under Jenny Schouten Short. I have to run a spell check then it's ready. It will be my latest published edition of my blog, Two Tumbleweeds.

The Rijks Museum in Amsterdam

Enno and I are back in The Netherlands and very busy seeing all the famous sights.
I'll start with Rembrandt at the Rijks Museum.
This famous group of men
greet you when you enter. Amazing?

I took the train and met up with my cousin, Bobbie,
who is visiting from Tennessee.
We took Tram # 5 to the Museum Plein
and spent two days at the Rijks and Van Gogh Museums.
I wasn't allowed to take photos inside the Van Gogh
but made up for it in the Rijks.
What an inspiration
to this painter.

Children, Groups and Animals

These are the paintings I did this week.
The baby is my favorite,
next is Benny and Ricky walking.
My goal is to simplify the forms and not put
too much detail
as I did with
the boy in the blue shirt.

Painting with Judi Betts

I'm taking a
workshop with watercolor artist, Judi Betts,
on painting children,
not portraits as such
but children and their personalities.
I'm painting my grandsons.

Judi demonstrates here use of washes.
